University Mathematics I, guided by two primary objectives that have crystallized over many years of teaching linear algebra and calculus. For the student, our objective was to explain the basic concepts in a precise, readable manner and to clearly define and demonstrate linear algebra and calculus with so many examples and solved problems for the first year university students. for the instructor, our objective to design a comprehensive teaching instrument that uses proven pedagogical techniques, thus freeing the instructor to make the most eficient use of classroom time. The first edition of the university mathematics I is designed for students whose primary interest is in engineering, the physical and social sciences,or nontechnical fields in addition to mathematics major students. We have attempted to keep the presentation geared to a beginner’s experience and maturity. If a theorem is stated without proof, we have generally augmented
the discussion by examples. This material contains two parts.
Part I. Linear Algebra
Part II. Calculus of Functions of Single Variable.
Part 1, "Linear Algebra, "is comprised of chapter 1 and 2. A thorough discussion of vectors and vector space is contained in chapter 1, and matrices and determinants in chapter 2. Part II contains calculus of functions of single variable consisting of four chapters; chapter 3, "Limit and Continuity," chapter 4, "The Derivative,” Chapter 5,"Application of the Derivative," and chapter 6, "The Integral and its Application."
The chapters are subdivided into relatively short sections. Each section in-
cludes typical examples and problems illustrating the concepts, methods, and
results with their applications.
